Country Living Grain Mill

Here is a look at the Country Living Grain Mill. A great addition to your long term food storage. If you are going to store wheat, rice, corn or any grains, this will enable you to grind it down into flour and other ingredients for baking, etc. This is a hand operated grain mill but it can be fitted with a “V belt” or “fan belt” and connected to a motor for electric operation. It also has an optional “power bar” that gives you more leverage should you need it. The folks at Country Living in Stanwood, WA are nice, friendly people. I highly recommend this as a must have item for anyone storing grains for that rainy day.

Rainwater collection commercial for IWS

Rainwater collection is a viable strategy to meet our water demands by capturing this resource before it runs off into our streets and sewers. Rainwater harvesting is a green building technique that can be low-tech such as a rain barrel or high-tech with connections to landscape irrigation systems or filtered and disinfected and used as a potable water source.

How to cook fresh pumpkin & seeds

There are a couple of ways to cook fresh pumpkin: 1. You can use a rice/veggie steamer. Cut the pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds and cut into chunks, steam for about 45 minutes or so. Peel and then mash. 2. Put a few inches of water into a big pot and cut the pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds and cut into chunks and steam it. Peel and mash. You can always peel the pumpkin first and then steam. 3. Cut the pumpkin in half and put into a 350 oven and place in a baking dish with about 1 inch of water and cover. Bake for about 1-1 1/2 hours.

Video # 10 in our Survival Gardening series go over soils and soil improvement techniques. Video #11 will follow shortly. Unless you are keeping a herd of large animals like cows, it’s going to be very hard to keep grow food long term using just what’s “on” the farm or homestead. For a handful of raised beds, half dozen rabbits and similar number of chickens MAY provide enough fertilizer to keep your soil in good shape. But for a serious amount of ground, ie, enough to truly keep a family of 4 of so in food, it’s going to be next to impossible to produce ALL your fertilizer and soil amendments ON THE FARM or homestead. While I do NOT claim to be an “organic gardener”, most of these soil improvement techniques are similar to those used in organic gardening. As a rule, we do NOT use pesticides on our VEGETABLES. We have been forced to use them on our fruit trees before to SAVE TREES. So understand that just because we don’t do everything “organic” doesn’t mean we slather DDT on the ground everywhere….. www.survivalreport.net www.homesteadingandsurvival.com tags- gardening, soil improvement, manure, fertilizer, hard times, economic collapse, economic crisis, peak oil, end of oil, survivalist, homesteading, homestead, survival, 2012, bird flu, preparedness emergency, Patriots, Alex Jones, 911, Dow, market, food shortages, food storage, anything else that will bring folks in.

These are best planted in late May and early June. Other vegetables can also be purchased from the nursery and planted earlier. In the early stages of gardening I recommend this to help with the success of your garden. Another time of year for planting is August. This is when your winter vegetables would go in. Unfortunately, nurseries don’t seem to carry vegetables at this time of year, so you would have to sow your own in July or purchase plants earlier and plant then. Garden Maintenance Weeding * Weeds rob moisture and nutrients from vegetable plants, therefore you are helping to increase harvests by eliminating competition. Weeds also block sunlight. * Have a positive attitude toward the task. It provides exercise, helps make compost and produces better veggies. * Hoe regularly, even when you don’t see a lot of weeds. This helps to kill germinating seeds and cultivates the soil. * Avoid walking on newly cultivated beds. The soil compaction helps weeds to germinate and
