By now everyone knows about the numerous health benefits of whole grains. However, given that we are aware of this valuable information, not too many of us actually consume the recommended daily dosage of three servings. The truth is most people are lucky if they even consume one serving per day. A recent study confirms that people who consume whole grains, eat them unknowingly by munching on various snacks. This means that we have absolutely no intention of incorporating whole grains into our diet. In this article I will provide a few easy ways to incorporate more of this healthy food into our daily diet.

Part One of a new series showcasing some Homesteading and Pioneer living skills. We recently attended a public festival demonstrating some of these “old school” skills. In this video we toured the festival and talked with some of the folks demonstrating these skills. With some of these people we had to kind of “lead” them into talking about the skills via asking obvious questions, etc. Some were really helpful and interested in talking about the skills, a few were downright rude. As your watching this, consider the amount of TIME involved with certain tasks- like putting up a year supply of firewood. In this first video we show them using a crosscut saw and a Bucksaw. It would take you probably weeks to put up a year supply of firewood with these methods. Now it’s important to know these skills and even have of these old school tools and implements, but don’t throw away your chainsaws! Matter of fact, you should take a hard look at your chainsaws and resulting logistics train (spare parts, extra bar, extra chains, files, preserved fuel, fuel mix, bar/chain oil, etc.) after watching this once you realize that you could put up as much wood in probably a DAY that it would take a WEEK or more to put up with hand tools! I’m all for learning these skills and we practice a lot of these skills regularly, but I also think it’s important to stockpile a pile of cheap soap (Ivory 16 bars $3.). Make soap by yourself from scratch- not from a kit- one time and you’ll want to go out and …

The practice of food preservation has been around for generations. The canning process was passed down through the ages. However, changes in society during the 20th century caused many people to veer away from canning their own food. There were too main reasons:
1. The convenience that grocery stores offered already processed foods. 2. People stopped growing their own food and no longer raised livestock.
Grain Mill built in 1609 at the Adamhof farmstead in Vorderlehengericht (Kinzig Valley). It was in operation there until 1963 and was moved to Vogtsbauernhof in south-eastern Germany in 1964. Possession: Possessing their own mills was a vital part of the economic independence of the Black Forest farmsteads. The isolated locations of the farmsteads and the poor means of transportation were the decisive factors. The farmers paid a fee to the sovereign for the milling license to cover their private milling needs. Primarily rye was ground in these mills. Wheat could not be grown in the Black Forest. The pounder was used to remove the husks from millet, barley, and oats. Grains and bones were also crushed for livestock feed. Construction: The mills were built by mill builders. The construction, as well as calculating the dimensions of the water wheel, gears, and the grinding apparatus, required expertise and experience. Well-built water wheels made of lark, pine, or oak lasted 20 years. Simpler models made of spruce held up for 10 years. The shaft axis was made of oak or spruce. Oak was used for the wheel flange of the cogwheel, and beech or wild-apple wood was used for the teeth. The parts subjected to heavy wear and tear were constructed in such a way that they could be readily repaired or replaced. Weighing several tons, millstones were chiefly made out of indigenous sandstone until the end of the 19th century. Following the advent of the railroad, the champagne stones …

Filmed for Live and Loud on MTV on 18 May 1997 after Nick Cave had been nominated for the best 1996 male artist and refused the honor (see his letter to MTV on www.nick-cave.com). The songs performed were: Into My Arms, Brompton Oratory, West Country Girl, Far From Me, and The Carny. Sorry for the mess up in the middle of the clip, it’s how it was on my copy. Far From Me can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHsXMkv9jjo. Warren Ellis’ appearance on the accordion makes version even more mad and circus-like. The Carny is one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever, full of savage beauty and an intensity that only Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds can bring … Lyrics: And no-one saw the carny go And the weeks flew by Until they moved on the show Leaving his caravan behind It was parked out on the south east ridge And as the company crossed the bridge With the first rain filling the bone-dry river bed It shone, just so, upon the edge Dog-boy, atlas, half-man, the geeks, the hired hands There was not one among them that did not cast an eye behind In the hope that the carny would return to his own kind And the carny had a horse, all skin and bone A bow-backed nag, that he named Sorrow. How it is buried in a shallow grave In the then parched meadow And the dwarves were given the task of digging the ditch And laying the nag’s carcass in the ground And boss Bellini, waving his smoking pistol around saying “The nag is dead meat” “We can’t afford to carry dead weight” The whole …
